No Fear: Embracing the Journey of Horse and Mind Training

In the quiet grassland forests of Clear Sky Retreat Center, I stepped into something unexpected—a journey with horses. I hadn’t spent time with them before, and truthfully, I was afraid. But I showed up anyway, and said so. In a group where vulnerability is welcome, I was simply seen—without correction or reassurance. That was the beginning.

With Natural Horsemanship lessons led by Yvonne, I began to see how my fear wasn’t a wall, but a doorway. Supported by the teachings of Catherine Pawasarat Sensei, I remembered that training the mind is possible—and powerful. Her example of deep compassion extends to all beings, including these horses, who were now part of my training.

One teaching from Qapel stood out: “You must be willing to die, no matter what.” What at first felt like a dramatic idea became an invitation—to stop letting fear decide what I can or cannot do. Not just with horses, but in all areas of life.

As the lessons continued, I noticed changes—not just in how I approached the horses, but in how I approached myself. Fear had less control. My posture shifted. My energy softened. I was learning their language, and they were responding.

Sensei often teaches that training horses reflects the process of training ourselves. Each moment with these beings became a mirror, showing my inner state—storm or calm, fear or openness. Through conscious interaction, I grew more resilient, more connected, and more willing to be seen.

This journey of “No Fear” continues to unfold. Being witnessed is vulnerable, but it creates connection. As we share our experiences—our fear, growth, and learning—we strengthen together. With each step, we become more honest, more present, and more capable of transformation.
