Facing Fear with Horses: A Mindfulness Journey at Clear Sky

At Clear Sky Retreat Center in British Columbia, I unexpectedly found myself learning natural horsemanship—despite a long-held fear of horses.

With the guidance of mindfulness teachers and our horse trainer Yvonne, I began to understand that fear didn’t have to control me. Each moment with the horses became a practice in emotional awareness, self-regulation, and conscious connection.

One teaching stuck with me: “You must be willing to die, no matter what.” It reminded me to stop letting fear run my life.

As I built trust with the horses, I discovered confidence and calm that extended far beyond the paddock. At Clear Sky, training the mind and training with animals go hand in hand—both teach us presence, patience, and deep compassion.
